The Island of Dino

Right in front of the town of Praia A Mare along the Riviera dei Cedri, there is the largest of the islands of Calabria: the island of Dino. It extends for about 50 hectares with a maximum altitude of 100 meters. Its name should be from the Greek word "dina", which means storm. When the sea is impetuous, its rocks are strongly beaten by the waves. There are those who trace the meaning of the name to beauty, here there would have been a temple (aedina) built by sailors in honor of Venus, by virtue of the virtuous beauty of the island, immersed in the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. On the island you can dock thanks to a small pier, for the rest the slopes of the island are steep, with cliffs up to 80 meters high. Along the coast there are sea caves, among these the most famous are the Blue Grotto. You can take part in boat excursions that leave from Praia a Mare or from Scalea
